Bojing Wu

In terms of derelict, iplan to create a sense of scratch on the wall which produce a feeling that the abandoned try to leave the last sign of his existence in world. After that, i asked my parents to help me to film the storyboard of the story. The following picture is an experiment i made to put the typeface i have made on the photo to sreate a cover.

The plot i designed for this picture book is like this: P1 is cover, which is the protagonist s standing and shrouded in darkness, only his body give out faint light. (here refer to Andrei Zadorine’ s work). Then the story unfolds. The protagonist (called A here) was abandoned by his family and drove away from the house. The A walked aimlessly in the street. In his eyes, the color of the world has changed. When he sat in the corner watching the crowd, he tried to catch other’ s attention by reaching out his hand, which was also his cry for help.Soon afterwards, the darkness erode his body. He displayed hopeless in his eyes at the end of his life and finally swallowed by the darkness.

It comes to me that I can use the invert function of photoshop to deal with Jay’s work. Then I found that the photos were much better after being processed by me. So I have drawn up the above.

After the plot was set, I began to create the characters in the picture book. After I made many improvements, I thought will give people a sense of substitution. 

I continued to try creation method of some dramatis personae with the purpose of finding a more appropriate creation method.This time, i tried to draw a person with small hand and big body, which leave the first impression of clumsy and useless to people just like what the abandoned looks like in the eyes of others.Compare to the character settinq experiments, i think such character images can better display the state of the abandoned.

After i designed the figure, i sketched the effect with colored pencil. But i am not satisfied with the result, because the mix-color effect is not good and do not produce the obscure sense, on the contrary, the line is very stiff. Therefore, i will try to use some painting materials that are easy to produce mix-color effect.

I believe that the final work needs the audience to see more details clearly because these details can convey more information to the audience. Precision is also needed in inverse, which help readers to recognize plot and form. The idea of anti-color comes from the color inverse experiment done before. The anti-color effect can indicate that the world in the eyes ofthose who suffer serious loneliness is different from the one in the eyes of normal people, which is the root cause that they think they are incompatible with the world.

I obtained first-hand photos of old stuff and stray animals by photoing outside. I observed and recorded the characteristics of the abandoned objects or animals, including the messy environment, dirty surface, weary manner, and weak posture, and so on. I associate stray dogs with the abandoned people not only because they suffer the same embarrassing circumstances but also their eyes exude the emotion of longing for acceptance and feeling uneasy about the future. They may have been needed, but they are abandoned by their loved ones and society due to illness, oldness, or gender.

Hayao Miyazaki is a famous anti-war animator. His antiwar masterpieces include Howl’s moving castle, princess Mononoke and Castle in the Sky etc. Miyazaki likes to portray the cruelty of war in a love story, especially the damage to nature, and he has a unique insight into the effects of warfare on the natural environment. Miyazaki said ‘Before long, the apprehension of nature’s alterity turns into dread. Nature is no linger seen as an inert setting available for scientists to poke and probe, but rather as a threatening agency.Hayao Miyazaki’s World Picture (2015, p.31) As a child, Miyazaki had to flee his town of Utsonomiya amid the firebomb raids of World War Two. Growing up in post-war Japan, he witnessed firsthand its rapid modernisation and rapid urban sprawl.These experiences would make a lasting impression on Miyazaki who has pushed anti-war and pro-environmental messages in his films, which were rare when he first started out.Hayao Miyazaki: Japan’s godfather of animation?(BBC news, 2016)

The princess Mononoke , this film is a classic of Miyazaki’s anti-war works, especially on environmental protection. In the movie, because people are greedy to mine more iron, the habitat of animals in the forest has been destroyed, and at the same time, the animal sand human beings are at loggerheads. In my opinion, this film is also be the most cruel film from Miyazaki, people can see the blood and the severed body at every where. Environmentalism is a primary theme, as the characters struggle to balance human survival with the needs of the nature around them.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is Miyazaki’s first work, in the film Nausicaa of the Valley of Stroke (1984), in which two apocalyptic kingdoms, Tolumekia and Pejite, are locked in a struggle for survival for control of an ancient weapon of mass destruction called “Giant Warrior”.Even to destroy their own country completely in order to destroy another country.Studio Ghibli’s first official work was Hayao Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky (1986).As in Nausicaa, the main villains are agents and soldiers of an imperial government determined to rediscover and use an ancient weapon of mass destruction.Like Princess Nausicaa, the young heroes of Sky City, Princesses Sita and Pazu, try to avoid war by destroying weapons of mass destruction.

Takahata’s Tomb of the Fireflies has a very different narrative style than Miyazaki’s, even though Tomb of the Fireflies comes from Studio Ghibli. Film critic Roger Ebert wrote in a 2000 review that “since the earliest days, animated films have been cartoons for children and families. But these films exist within safe confines, arousing tears but not sadness. The grave of the firefly is full of emotion. Such a powerful experience forces people to rethink animation.”  (Heather Chen, 2018). BBC News (World) (2018) tweeted its assessment of the Grave of the Fireflies “If anyone thinks anime is only made up of over-the-top facial expressions, a lot of sexual content and corny teen romance, watch Grave of the Fireflies and prepare to be proven 100% wrong.” Grave of the Fireflies opens on the same day that Studio Ghibli releases another film, My Neighbor Totoro.

The two sisters ran barefoot along the country road, in the home to the pipe at the foot, so beautiful scene reminiscent of childhood good life, but the manager of the fireflies in the tomb of the two brother and sister but let a person love dearly, father go to war, the mother had been killed, stay in relatives and intermittently cynicism, the sister died because of malnutrition, male leading role also lost power last live starved to death in the street. It’s clear that Ghibli is using Totoro’s beauty as a counterpoint to the brutality of war.

Despite his deep disappointment with the adult world, Miyazaki describes himself as a pessimist, and doomsday images recurs repeatedly in his films.But he is not a hopeless pessimist. His films are filled with brave and caring young men and women who act as sober messianic figures to save the day from the human devastation wrought by careerists.

I made reference to the artistic works of the artist Andrei Zadorine. Andrei is a Belarusian painter, I feel that his painting full express the loneliness and uncertainty in people’s heart. Jay Pingree, an artist, creates his work by photos he took by himself. He is so fascinated by the anamorphosis caused by long exposures.  You will sense such feeling from his works that no one will stop for you in the boundless huge crowd. It seems that everyone in the crowd just brushes past you and will have no intersection with you. To them,  You are just a figure came across in their life without any meaning

Katherine Bradford’s works is mainly related to water, the universe and light. His paintings display dreamlike atmosphere, but the people in the painting often give people a feeling of loneliness, death and even the end of life. I think his painting style is similar to derelict that i imagined, especially his application of color.

“Perfume” is a tragic film, describing human isolation. The nose is an extremely sensitive genius Glenoye story, from the birth of abandoned him, has a miserable upbringing. In order to collect the most perfect fragrance in the world, the scent of a young girl, he did not hesitate to become a serial murderer, destroyed the lives of many young girls.

Being loved is one’s most coveted need and pursuit throughout life while loving someone is a lifelong learning ability. Only in the warmth of being loved to learn to love, life will become happy and complete. But Grenouille’s s life was a life without love. Because he’s never been loved, and he doesn’t know how to love anyone. In the course of watching the film, I felt sadness from the bottom of my soul. The gre nouille, hated by all, lived his whole life in a world of abandonment and enslavement, and he was not entitled to enter the other world, nor had his world ever been visited.

Since birth, no one has had a trace of warmth toward him, and never experienced “love” he, naturally also did not have the opportunity to learn to love. He has the most sensitive nose in the world, but he has no smell of his own. His natural sense of smell gave him almost perverted fascination with smell, which peaked when he first came to town and smelled a girl’s scent.

After failing to kill the first girl, he greedily sniffed her body odor but was distressed to be unable to save and collect it. Eventually, as he learned how to collect it, he continued to kill because of his only obsession. But when he finally had control over everything with his perfume, he felt his true need to love and be loved in the midst of the revelry.

In my first class at LCC, I was actually very nervous, because English is my second language, and I was very worried about not understanding what the teacher was saying in class. What impressed me most was a group discussion in which all my team members were from different countries. I was so nervous that I couldn’t even speak. However, with the mutual encouragement of the group members, we finally finished the discussion, which also made me more confident in my oral English. However, sometimes I was assigned to a group member from my own country. At the beginning, everyone used to communicate in Chinese, even though the teacher always stressed that we should communicate in English. But after a period of time in some good English students led, we also began to use English dialogue.

About learning this year, most of my classmates will actively share their ideas with each other when the teacher is in a group, but some of them would not communicate with us. In fact, in my opinion, it is not necessary to exchange ideas with each other every time, but it does increase the communication between students, and occasionally they can give some opinions about the works to each other. Fortunately, I also made some friends in this process, and now I am looking forward to meeting them at LCC next year. However, I met some problems when doing the project. Although I plan to study animation as an undergraduate, I have never done any animation works before, so I am not quite sure about the proficiency of software and painting, and even I am not satisfied with the first project. However, as I worked on more and more projects, I gained some confidence in my animation skills.

The focus of my project is a part of the population’s psychological state. I intend to explore the theme of ‘how a person goes from being needed to being abandoned’. The intended audience for my work is everyone. I am aiming to produce illimitation.  I hope to create a world as the real outcasts see it. My outcome maybe is he/she has been despair and disappear. I would like to explore this topic because I know what it feels like to be lonely and helpless, so I want more people to pay attention to these communities as well.

From the beginning of the course to now, I have learned a lot of things, such as stop motion animation, hand-drawn animation and many basic operations and knowledge of animation. I think the more difficult thing is to grasp the speed of the animation, so I usually use rotoscoping as my action reference. I am most interested in stop motion animation, and I enjoy the process of making props and shooting. But what I want to do more is to learn some 3D modeling and color experiments.

When I want to transform to illustrations, I want to draw some more content works. Usually, an animation uses a lot of pictures combined to tell a story, but an illustration can read a lot of content through a picture. So I think illustration may help me think more about art, and there may be a lot of experimentation in the process.

The reason why I chose to be an abandoned person is because I had depression. At that time, I felt that I was no longer needed by the whole world. At the same time, many of my friends have the same feeling. As people’s spiritual world is becoming increasingly scarce, I want to draw people’s attention to the people around me through my works. Maybe I will find some art exhibitions or related books on depression as a reference source.

I want to express most of the work of this project by hand, because many hand-painted tools have a lot of randomness when painting, such as random paper textures. These are irreplaceable with computers. Maybe in the process of making this project, I will try many different materials and tools to do a lot of experiments, and maybe also use PS and AI.
